Snaps Dev Log #4: Town Police System

Hello everyone,

We are excited to share the latest update for our game Snaps! In this dev log, we’ll be introducing the new police system that we've just implemented.

Police System Overview

We've added two new NPCs to the town: Vanessa, a female officer, and Jace, a male officer. These NPCs are regular members of the community, so you can interact with them just like any other character. You can talk, flirt, argue with them, follow them on social media, or even trade. However, as police officers, they have the authority to write you tickets for certain crimes.

Crimes that can get you a ticket:

  • Pulling out a firearm in a public place
  • Pointing a firearm at a citizen
  • Discharging a firearm in a public place
  • Throwing a grenade in a public place
  • Shooting a citizen
  • Throwing a grenade at a citizen
  • Killing a citizen

How the System Works

If you commit any of the offenses listed above and an NPC witnesses it, the crime will be automatically reported to the police. Depending on the severity and number of crimes committed, either one or both officers will head towards you. Once they reach you, a conversation will ensue where the officer informs you of the charges.

After the conversation, a fine ticket will be issued at the police station. This ticket includes:

  • A list of the crimes you are charged with
  • The cost for each offense
  • The witness’s name
  • The total cost of the ticket
  • The due date for payment

You must pay this fine by the due date, or face further legal consequences (details to be determined).

Riot Shields and Night Patrol

Police officers are equipped with riot shields. If they see you with a gun, they will deploy their shields, protecting them from your attacks.

Crimes are only reported during the morning and evening times. At night, the town is under a curfew due to cultist raids. This makes nighttime lawless, and all villagers are expected to stay indoors. During these hours, Vanessa and Jace patrol the village, standing back to back and using their shields to fend off cultists. Their efforts help to clear out the nightly raids.
